Sydney's summer sun is intense. Our UV levels are among the highest in the world, and skin damage can occur faster than many people realise, even on overcast days, even in winter, and even through glass.
SPF is not just a summer product. It is the single most important step in any skin protocol, regardless of your skin type, your concerns, or the treatments you are undergoing. Here is what the science says, and why we are so firm on this point.
Understanding UV Radiation
UV radiation from the sun reaches the skin in two primary forms: UVA and UVB. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and play a significant role in skin cancer development. UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the dermis and are the primary driver of photoageing, including pigmentation, collagen breakdown, and loss of elasticity.
UVA rays are present year-round, at consistent levels throughout the day, and can penetrate cloud cover and glass. This is why sun protection is not just a beach-day consideration. It is a daily non-negotiable.
Australia's proximity to the ozone hole over Antarctica means UV radiation levels here are significantly higher than at equivalent latitudes in the northern hemisphere. Sydney regularly records UV index levels of 11 or above in summer, which is classified as extreme.
What UV Damage Does to the Skin
UV radiation causes direct DNA damage to skin cells, triggering mutations that can lead to skin cancer over time. It also generates reactive oxygen species (free radicals) that damage collagen fibres, degrade elastin, and impair the skin's repair mechanisms.
The visible effects of cumulative UV damage include pigmentation (sunspots, melasma, uneven tone), fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and a rough or leathery skin texture. Researchers estimate that up to 80 percent of visible skin ageing is attributable to UV exposure, not chronological age.
UV damage is also cumulative and largely irreversible. The damage that occurs today adds to the damage that occurred yesterday, last year, and throughout your lifetime. Prevention is far more effective than treatment.
Choosing the Right SPF
We recommend a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ applied every morning as the final step in your skincare routine, before makeup. Broad-spectrum means the product protects against both UVA and UVB radiation.
SPF 50+ blocks approximately 98 percent of UVB radiation. No sunscreen blocks 100 percent, which is why reapplication every two hours during outdoor activity is important.
The formulation matters. A sunscreen you enjoy using is one you will actually apply consistently. We stock a range of medical-grade SPF products in the clinic, including lightweight fluid formulas, tinted options, and formulas designed for sensitive or post-treatment skin.
SPF and Your Treatment Results
If you are investing in clinical skin treatments, consistent SPF use is essential to protect and preserve your results. UV exposure is the primary driver of pigmentation recurrence after treatment, and it accelerates the collagen breakdown that treatments like skin needling and Rejuran work to reverse.
We consider SPF non-negotiable for all of our clients, regardless of their treatment plan. It is the foundation on which everything else is built.
