Why Your Gut Health Might Be the Secret to Better Skin

Have you ever noticed your skin breaking out during a stressful time, or becoming red and inflamed after eating certain foods? That is not coincidence. It is your body talking.

The connection between the gut and the skin, known as the gut-skin axis, is one of the most active areas of research in dermatology and integrative medicine. What is happening in your gut has a direct and measurable effect on what is happening in your skin.

The Gut-Skin Axis: An Overview

The gut microbiome is the community of trillions of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that live in the digestive tract. This community plays a central role in immune regulation, inflammation, nutrient absorption, and the production of various signalling molecules that affect the entire body, including the skin.

When the gut microbiome is healthy and diverse, it supports a balanced immune response and keeps systemic inflammation in check. When it is disrupted, a state known as dysbiosis, the consequences can manifest throughout the body, including in the skin.

How Gut Health Affects Skin Conditions

Acne has been linked to gut dysbiosis in multiple studies. An imbalanced microbiome can increase intestinal permeability (sometimes called leaky gut), allowing bacterial products to enter the bloodstream and trigger systemic inflammation that manifests as acne, particularly inflammatory acne.

Rosacea is another skin condition with strong gut associations. Studies have found a significantly higher prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in rosacea patients, and treatment of SIBO has been shown to improve rosacea symptoms in some cases.

Eczema and psoriasis also have documented connections to gut health. The immune dysregulation that drives these conditions is influenced by the gut microbiome, and probiotic interventions have shown benefit in some clinical trials.

Even accelerated skin ageing has been linked to gut health. Chronic low-grade inflammation driven by gut dysbiosis contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, and impairs the skin's repair mechanisms.

The Role of Diet

Diet is the primary driver of gut microbiome composition. A diet rich in fibre, fermented foods, and diverse plant foods supports a healthy, diverse microbiome. A diet high in processed foods, refined sugars, and alcohol tends to reduce microbiome diversity and promote dysbiosis.

High glycaemic foods, those that cause rapid spikes in blood sugar, are particularly problematic for acne-prone skin. They stimulate insulin and IGF-1 production, which in turn drives sebum production and promotes the inflammatory cascade that leads to acne.

Dairy, particularly skim milk, has also been associated with acne in some studies, possibly due to its hormonal content and effect on IGF-1 levels.

Supporting Your Gut for Better Skin

The most impactful changes you can make for gut health are dietary: increase fibre intake, eat a diverse range of plant foods, include fermented foods such as yoghurt, kefir, and sauerkraut, and reduce processed foods and refined sugars.

Targeted probiotic supplementation can also be beneficial, particularly for clients with specific skin conditions. The evidence for specific strains in specific conditions is growing, and this is an area where personalised advice from a practitioner is valuable.
